Picture from inFamous 2 detailsThe folks at Sucker Punch have spent the last two years working on inFamous 2, and today revealed what they’ve been talking about and doing with it to make it “awesome.” Not only will there be a whole city to explore, with many mission and mini-missions within, but they’re doing away with it having an “ending.” To accomplish this, a User-Generated Content feature has been added to the game. Players will be able to build new missions, and then share them with the world.

Resistance 3 multiplayer revealed

Picture from Resistance 3 multiplayer revealedThe PlayStation folks have revealed that Resistance 3 will feature 16-player Human vs. Chimera deathmatch and objective-based modes set in locations across the globe. That may seem somewhat jarring after the 40 and 60-player mayhem in RFOM and R2, but they claim that their motivation for the change was the fun they had on maps like Busyard and Bayou House.

Resistance 3 will offer a customizable progression system, in which players can create their own progression paths through multiplayer, spending their points on loadouts that fit their personal play style. Additionally, a multiplayer beta will be available via PSN later this year.

Another delay for The Old Republic

Picture from Another delay for The Old Republic

MCV sources have indicated that Star Wars fans won’t get their hands on The Old Republic until September. Last month, BioWare confirmed the game wouldn’t be coming out before April, but that still didn’t rule out the possibility of a spring release.

A supposed BioWare Mythic employee, calling himself The Louse, who was set to be laid off blogged late last year about various issues that the developer faced, among them the apparent $300 million budget for The Old Republic. “And you know what they’re most proud of? This is the kicker. They are most proud of the sound. No seriously. Something like a 20Gig installation, and most of it is voiceover work. That’s the best they have. The rest of the game is a joke. EA knows it and so does George Lucas, they’re panicking, and so most of Mythic has already been cannibalized to work in Austin on it because they can’t keep pushing back launch. Old Republic will be one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs from EA. Probably at the level of the Sims Online. We all know it too.”

We’ll see.

Picture from Modern Warfare 2 linked to airport tragedy?

Yesterday, a terrible tragedy took place at the Domodedovo airport in Moscow. A suicide bomber walked in and detonated, killing himself and dozens more in a matter of seconds.

According to Gamesradar, a Russian government financed television channel then spliced together footage from Modern Warfare 2 and the video taken from yesterday’s bombing. The reporter emphasizes twice during the coverage that the game was made by an American company, and says it is very similar to the attack that happened in the real world. The report ends with the newscaster saying that “so far, no one has come forward to condemn the game.”

And it wasn’t just the Russians. Walid Phares, a FOX News terrorism expert, said he was troubled by how closely the incidents resembled one another, less than two years after the game came out, and insists that we have to know if terrorists are using games to “apply the model.”

The developer is currently working on three unannounced games: a PSN/XBLA title based on an Avalanche Studios original IP, and two projects based on well-known licenses. One of the projects based on a well-known license is alleged to be an action title based on the upcoming Mad Max 4: Fury Road film (scheduled to release in 2012).

PSP2 musings

Picture from PSP2 musings

Tomorrow (actually late tonight for most of you reading this) is the day that we’re all supposed to get our first look at the PSP2, as Sony is scheduled to reveal it at an event in Tokyo. There’s been a lot of rumor being milled as to what we can expect, but so far all we really know is that it has dual analog sticks, a touch-sensitive panel, and a larger screen. Depending upon which design Sony opted for, it could open like a phone or it could be a flat device like the current model. Kotaku sources have also indicated that the current UMD drive was abandoned, and its capabilities could rival that of home consoles. I’ll hold my skepticism about that last bit in until after tomorrow. We’ll see.

Warning label bill reintroduced

Posted in News on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 by | Comments 1 Comment »

Picture from Warning label bill reintroducedHere we go again! In 2009, Representative Joe Baca introduced legislation that would require violent games to carry warning labels. These labels (similar to those now carried on cancer sticks) would warn that playing such titles was linked to aggressive behavior. The bill later died in committee, but it appears that Representative Baca did not give up. Gamespot reports that the bill (HR 400) has been reintroduced and referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Here’s to hoping that history repeats itself!
