Activision has announced the creation of Call of Duty XP 2011, a convention designed to celebrate the game’s community. Set to take place on a 12-acre compound in Los Angeles September 2-3, the event will host a reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3‘s multiplayer mode. The company anticipates that 6,000 attendees will be able to get their hands on the game’s cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes, and check out the fully functioning Call of Duty Elite service over the course of the convention. There will also be a $1 million Call of Duty tournament, with players able to qualify on site or by competing in regional Black Ops qualifiers, paintball competitions on a life-sized multiplayer map, live entertainment, and developer panels.

Tickets go on sale July 19 and will cost $150 each. All of the money from ticket sales will go to benefit the Call of Duty Endowment, a nonprofit group founded by Activision in 2009 to help soldiers transition to civilian life with job placement and training programs.

Picture from Star Wars Galaxies fans threaten lawsuit

VentureBeat reports that some Star Wars Galaxies players have written to inform of their desire to sue Sony Online Entertainment for shutting down the MMO next December. Unfortunately, those folks should have checked their facts first. The game’s EULA (you know, the paperwork in the packaging that no one ever reads) clearly states that Sony “may also terminate this Agreement if we decide, in our sole discretion, to discontinue offering the Game, in which case we may provide you with a prorated refund of any prepaid amounts.”

Sony is following through with the terms of their agreement, giving users pro-rated refunds for any subscription time after October 15. The game will then operate for free until it shuts down two months later.

Picture from Capcom: Permanent saves not an attack on used market

Capcom, publisher of Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D, has denied that discouraging secondhand sales of their recently released 3DS game was not their goal when they included a feature that permanently saves a player’s progress directly onto the cartridge. A company representative was quoted by Gamasutra as saying ”the nature of the game invites high levels of replayability in order to improve mission scores. Secondhand game sales were not a factor in this development decision.” Mercenaries joins Super Monkey Ball 3D on the list of 3DS games that do not allow saved games to be deleted.

Picture from Court strikes down California games law

In a long-awaited decision, the US Supreme Court has ruled that California may not ban the sale of violent video games to children, striking down a law that is the latest in a long line of attempts by various states to make the sale of such games illegal. In Governor of California v. the Entertainment Merchants Association, the court held in a 7-2 vote that ”Video games qualify for First Amendment protection. This country has no tradition of specially restricting children’s access to depictions of violence. And California’s claim that interactive video games present special problems, in that the player participates in the violent action on screen and determines its outcome, is unpersuasive.” The ruling invalidates a 2005 law that forbade the sale or rental of violent games to persons under 18.
