Picture from Next gen hopes and dreams

While I’m not ready to plunk down the amount of cash needed for a next-generation console just yet, I do think about them from time to time. New console generations bring new features—some good, and some considerably less good.

After spending some time brainstorming what I want in my next console, I came up with this list:

Interface customization I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wished I could change the order of things on either the 360 dashboard or the PS3’s XMB. There are some features I use more than others, and some I never use at all. When the next-gen consoles roll out, I want to be able to move sections around to maximize efficiency when I’m not playing a game. I would also like to be able to hide or deactivate features I don’t use.

Better peripheral support I believe that the next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft will have motion-control from the get-go. Not as the primary input method, as with the Wii, but I believe the Kinect 2 and Move 2 will act as selling points from the beginning. If these things are supposed to be features, I want more games supporting them. More games with alternate control styles supporting these things would be great, because they would get used more.

Less breaking It would be awesome to buy one of these fancy new consoles and not have it break down within the first year or two. I don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a new machine and have nightmares featuring red rings and yellow lights. I want the consoles to work and last. Many of us still own our original NES systems, and they’re still kicking. My original Playstation fell down a flight of stairs and still worked. When the current generation of consoles came out, it felt as if a poorly-aimed sneeze could ruin your gaming experience. That needs to change next round.

A spending limit I would like the PSN to cut me off if I’ve already bought and downloaded a game from them each month. Sometimes I get a little spend-crazy and purchase three or four games at a time, many of which I never play. Seriously, stop letting me buy things.

So that’s my list. I’m sure there are other things I want, and if I think of any more I’ll add them in the comments. What do you think? What next-gen features do you crave? 3D? Voice-activation? Cup holders?

I love the idea of a buying limit. I wouldn’t mind a return option as well even if there is a penalty. Puzzle Chronicles is just plain horrid. Maybe a rent option for a specific time period.

“Maybe a rent option for a specific time period”

Or mandatory demos. If you want to sell your product on PSN or Xbox Marketplace, you should be required to provide a demo.

Oh man, a dgital “rent” or a credit-based return system would be awesome. Good call.

And Closer we draw, to a Console that is really just another PC , complete with Tier one OEM proprietary limitations . LOL
