I use a Logitech MX Revolution with the reciever at least 3-4 feet from the mouse plugged into a USB port on the back of my computer, and it works just fine. I have an old (much much cheaper) Logitech dual mouse/keyboard setup that worked just about as well. Maybe you live under power lines or something? :)

That's a good suggestion, although you can't see in the pic I posed that the receiver is about one foot away from my monitor and the stereo equipment. I also keep the cell phone more than a foot away (any closer and I can tell the difference). With the way my computer desk is (and its not a desk in the technical sense; it's a table), I can't place the monitor any further away.

Perhaps what is strangest of all is that I get worse reception, at equal distance, from the keyboard than the mouse, even when both have fresh batteries. Meanwhile, my wireless network adapters can see networks all over the apartment complex, even when I just plug them in to a USB port on the back of my tower, right next to speaker wire, monitor cables, and a power strip.

At least rechargeable batteries are fairly cheap now. Wireless mice tend to go through them pretty quickly.

I have a Logitech MX3000 kit, the receiver of which now sits under my tele receiving the signal from my coffee table 4 feet away no problems. When I had it on my desktop PC, the receiver was atop the shelf above the monitor, about 2.5 feet above the units. I never had signal loss of any kind with it in these configurations. It may be that your receiver is too close to your PC or monitor, have you tried shifting it more than a foot away from them?
