Brainpipe
Developer and Publisher/Distributor: Digital Eel

Picture from Top Casual PC Games of 2008Brainpipe is an arcade action experience where you zip along within a curvy tube collecting glyphs and avoiding obstacles. Specifically, as you race, to avoid damage you have to dodge blorbs, posts, cleaners, slicers, twisters, glow worms, and gates. Played from a first-person perspective, you engage in real-time spatial navigation within a gorgeous physical environment that is even available in full widescreen. The eye motif that extends from the elegant menu system to the addictive gameplay is wonderful, including the “iris” you look through as you play — it will open wider and become redder when you collide with dangerous items — to display damage. The sound effects and music are also truly sumptuous. You easily control all of your actions with the mouse, with the left button allowing you to slow down or repair yourself. Beginning relatively calmly, the challenge and intensity escalates as you play until it stretches your reflexes beyond their limits. You get sucked into the mesmerizing setting immediately, and you will not want to blink or turn away for even an instant.

Elements
Developer: QB9
Publisher/Distributor: Mumbo Jumbo

Picture from Top Casual PC Games of 2008Elements is an enchanting swap-and-match puzzle game in which you combine like elements to release their powers and ultimately obtain the Elixir of Life. The intriguing background story involves the discovery of a valuable document, the Alchemy Treatise, that dates back to 1507 (the time of Leonardo da Vinci) and presents a formula to create life by combining in special ways the four elements -water, earth, air, and fire -and a fifth element not yet revealed. Special polyhedrons and Renaissance art illustrate your magical quest. You get to play through over 50 levels, and along the way you encounter 15 unlockable pickups. You follow clues in the Book of Elements to try to become an expert alchemist, building chains and combos for bonus points. There are three entertaining play modes – Classic, Timed, and Relaxed – to suit the varied preferences of different types of players, and you can conveniently chart your progress on the Alchemist’s Pentagram. If you want to engage in a series of beautiful and innovative puzzle challenges and are tired of the standard “match-three” games, this one is for you.

CellZenith
Developer and Publisher/Distributor: Faramix Enterprises

Picture from Top Casual PC Games of 2008CellZenith is a third-person sci-fi vehicular shooter. After a catastrophic lunar war, futuristic advanced combat crafts called CELs are relocated to CellZenith, an uninhabited station on Neptune. Your mission is to kill or be killed while trying to figure out who or what is behind a recent attack. In the Campaign mode, players command a team comprising 35 CELs while playing 30 levels and 14 maps. Moving from level to level you acquire additional air and ground units and get to use 19 secondary weapons. Movement is controlled via the keyboard while aiming and firing your weapons is handled by the mouse. CellZenith also comes with four fun minigames, each of which serves as a simpler challenge than the more complex campaign mode: Cel Attack, Ball Escape, and Tournament are arcade blast fests, while Black Hole is an exercise is precision ball manipulation. The lasers and explosions are blindingly vivid. CellZenith’s sound effects, music, and visuals are absolutely stunning, and the overall play experience is incredibly polished and professional for fans of shooting action.

Elements is a fantastic game. I bought it at full price, and have not regretted it for a second. It’s the only game to get close to “Bejeweled” levels of addiction for me. I highly recommend it to everyone.
