Take-Two announced today that XCOM, which was projected for a March release, has been delayed until sometime between April 2012 and March 2013. Take-Two hasn’t provided an explanation for this new delay, though it could be that it doesn’t want XCOM to not get lost in the release of a few other shooters, including The Darkness II and Max Payne 3. The delay, while upsetting to gamers, was received with some relief from the world’s cattle population.

I wasn’t really looking forward to this game anyway, despite the X-Com name, so the delay doesn’t bother me in the slightest. The only thing it really has in common with the rest of the X-Com series is that it has aliens, and the “X-Com” name attached to it. Otherwise, as far as I can tell, everything else has been changed… e.g., you’re just an ordinary FBI agent, not part of an international task force, to name just one change.
You know what would make this game make sense? If it was a prequel. Think about it: X-Com was supposed to be near future. What if this was more X-Files than X-com, the perfect lead-in to a coming remake, and they were just being clever about it? They could rebuild and relaunch a legendary franchise with tactical and FPS games being released streadily, building a story and casting a wide player net. But what am I saying? That would make far too much sense for the gaming industry. A Halo browser MMO is more likely to get backing.
Ok, Psycros, you’ve convinced me. If it were a prequel, and if it were a lead-in to a relaunch of the series, I’d reconsider buying it.
