Now I’ve heard it all!
MSNBC reports that a group of South Korean psychiatrists say they have successfully reduced “StarCraft addiction” by giving players the popular antidepressant, Bupropion. The drug, commonly sold as Wellbutrin and used to treat both depression and nicotine addiction, was used in a study at Chung Ang University on 11 people who played the game for more than 30 hours weekly. The results after six weeks on the medication were that the test subjects were able to reduce their playing time by 35%.
Given the size of the study, I’m sure much debate will ensue, but it would be interesting to hear what our resident experts have to say on the matter.

That study seems like crap for several reasons:
1) The number of subjects is super small
2) You have to consider that people that addicted to a video game or any activity might be compensating for some other psychological problem, so the medicine might be helping some other problem that is just being manifested through an addiction to gaming.
3) The culture of S. Korea might be the actual cause of the internet/Star Craft problem.
4) There was no mention of a placebo or any other control group being “treated”.
I’m not anti-psychiatry or psychology. I just don’t trust much of anything coming out of Korea, especially when the facts surrounding the findings seem so hokey.
I guess though, if the bupropion is used in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapy then maybe it’s the right step forward for people.
The article on MSNBC just made it sound like that because drugging these 11 people helped reduce a gaming addiction, it might be a solution for the 2 million internet addicts in S. Korea.
Has no one read A Brave New World?
I’m all for it. Let them load up on antidepressants. In doing so they prove to be stupid, and stupidity must be punished. Conveniently, they are also punishing themselves on the spot. It’s one of the rare cases of absolute win-win.
Based on the article it was hurting their lives, and that’s never a cool situation no matter how stupid someone is, or what country they live in.
It’s basically a similar situation to people on that show Intervention. Yeah they sort of deserve it, but at a certain point they need real help, not some crap attempt at a “study” into the problem.
