According to ABC News, your cash is not always welcome at the Apple store.
Being disabled and on a fixed income, Diane Campbell held off on buying a computer until the Apple iPad came along. It was small, mobile and perfect for her needs. So, little by little she saved up the $600 she needed to get one. She was at the Apple store in Palo Alto, about to pull out the big wad of cash and take home her first computer. Instead, she received a terrible blow.
“Sorry, we don’t take cash,” declared the clerk.
Apparently, the Apple sales policy requires that you pay by credit card or debit card. Diane didn’t have any plastic and her cash was useless, so no iPad.
Apple did not respond to a 7 On Your Side request for an explanation of the policy, however, the store clerk did explain to Campbell that it was to prevent overseas black marketing.

Proves that Apple & Steve Jobs are just plain EVIL!
To discriminate against the disabled???/ Seriously??/ F[edit] Apple!
Yeah, yeah… and Microsoft and Bill Gates are irreproachable.
[I typed this on a MacBook Pro]
Don’t get me started on MS – we don’t have that much room on ther server.
Diane Campbell could of said ok that is fine can you hold this iPad while I go to the nearest place that sells visa gift cards. I really do not see a problem with this only if they said they couldn’t hold it until she got the visa gift cards. Its not like she was on her lunch break and had to hurry back to work.
Ah, but the problem with that is that according to the ABC report:
“She contacted 7 On Your Side and we contacted Apple Computer. The company only pointed to their purchase policy. It says there is a limit of two iPads per customer and you must pay by credit or debit card. Gift cards will not work either. “
Can she not Perhaps get a pre payed Visa card or the like and use that ? I know they cost a few bucks to start up but it Cant be that much more cash ???
Then again , If anyone with half a heart was there I dont see why they couldnt have taken her cash and bought the damn thing with thier Credit card For her..
I’m thinking that they “would” take a pre-paid card, but given her situation, she might not be aware of their existence.
Someone I know had the same problems recently. The Apple store refused cash. Well, serves them right for buying this garbage. I am not a fan of Microsoft, but I will take their policies any day over those of Apple. And products too actually.
Karma… Steve Jobs… karma.
You jump ahead of the line via paying for your new liver and…. Mr Jobs forcing Ellen to apologize for her parody and… Macs & webcams being used in PA high-schools to spy on unsuspecting students in their homes… and now this?!?!?!
THIS!?!?!? There’s a thing called CUSTOMER SERVICE! There’s a thing called COMMON SENSE! Heck, there’s a thing called GOOD PR…
Karma, Mr Jobs… karma. Enjoy the liver.
It sucks for her. A real drag and inconvenience. Probably a very embarrassed Apple employee who had to tell her that he couldn’t take her money, too.
Let’s make sure we don’t lose our perspective here, however.
- We’re talking about a woman trying to buy an iPad. Not pay her electricity bill or buy groceries. It’s inconvenient and annoying if the purchase is delayed because of Apple’s purchase policy… but we’re not talking about a life-threatening issue here.
- This is not prejudice against the disabled. If there’s proof that Apple accepts cash from others but not her, sure… maybe there’s something to it. I don’t think that was the case.
- In this day and age it’s pretty weird that someone doesn’t have access to a debit card. If they don’t have a debit card, even weirder if they can’t walk into their bank and leave 5 minutes later with one. It’s not as if this is a major hurdle. An inconvenience, yes… no argument there.
- This is not going to stop the woman from getting an iPad, nor is it going to put a dent in Apple’s sales. Like I said: An inconvenience and a bit of a bizarre payment policy… but this isn’t exactly a major scandal.
Enjoy the liver? Wow even for you omegabob that’s way over the top.
Anyway the “EVIL” company and CEO, that produce “garbage” and have no “COMMON SENSE” just reversed their no-cash policy based on this one incident.

Angel, do you really feel your comments are helping? I like Apple products as much as the next guy, but you’re acting like someone kicked your puppy.
Kris? Same IP range as Omegabob? Hmm… My comments are not here to help, but to express my disagreement with “your/his” characterizations of Apple. Looking for help? Dial 911.
1 – I have said that many times before (liver) on the forums.
2 – I only have ONE account /slaps forehead (check my ip addy now)
Oh, I forgot to mention this in my first post in this thread:
So, lemme get this straight… I can (and did) put down a $22,000 down payment on my car two years ago ($10k in cash & the other in a check). So THATS OK…. $10k CASH… but $500 (or whatever this POS costs) is UNACCEPTABLE??? Nice.
The liver/karma comment is wrong and if you got away with it in the forums is because in a sick way some people may think it’s funny. I don’t, and I get to determine what’s in good taste for the main site and what’s not. nuff’ said.
On the iPad, I was asked to post my impressions on formspring, here’s what I wrote: http://www.formspring.me/angelmunoz/q/413679342 – Notice that I like the concept more than the execution.
As far as your iPad comments, I think you’re dead on. I wouldn’t even think about getting one now, but I can see my youngest using a version of it for “just about” everything a child needs for schooling and heavy backpacks will become a “when I was a kid…” story. I say just about, however, as nothing beats the smell of a good musty tome now and then.
“This note is legal tender for all transactions public and private” I don’t know what part of this print on bills is confusing to Apple.
Another thing that occurred to me while reading this is are they saying they want to track you even after you have purchased one of their products?
1) I didn’t say it was funny or even correct (although he DID pay for it), just pointing out that I DID say this before.. its nothing new (from me)
2) I was upset that you’d think I’d create a second account here. Seriously, ya think i’d be a lil more creative than that, wouldn’t ya. At least I’d come up with a WAY better name and make that second character an actual forum member.. then wait approx one year to do whatever it was I was planning to do. Give me more credit than that
Back on topic: besides the so-called bootleg/black market issues, the real reason they didn’t accept cash is bc they want (now wanted) to project an ELITIST view of their products… esp since they cost way more than products that do sim things. I’m glad this PR is hurting them… proves they are jerks & can be hurt.
Then again, FORCING Ellen to apologize prob hurt them greatly too.
obob If Jobs paid or did not pay for his liver is not the issue here, instead your “Karma, Mr Jobs… karma. Enjoy the liver” comment is way out of line, and one I take serious issue with. I have acted in my right as publisher of the site to state my feelings about your comment and I sincerely hope you can respect that.
I have no idea how someone would ploy to impersonate support for their own opinions. I simply found it interesting that the poster was from your same IP range and traceroutes to the same general location. What does that mean? Don’t know, and honestly don’t care. Maybe Michael Smith has multiple personalities or maybe some other co-worker wanted to suck up to you. Honestly I don’t have the time or interest to figure it out.
I guess that comment was too soon
. Again, just stating that I said it before so it wasn’t shocking to me (wasnt debating the actual comment or content:))
I took umbrage with being accused of posting under another account when I can easily express my thoughts under this account. Unlike some people I know, I actually admit to my transgressions and in this case, wasn’t (weren’t?) moi.
Side note: unless I was working some kinda crazy hours (1am ET), I posted that from home… Verzion FTW!!! The other posts from today were posted from my work PC or from when I was doing dookie & posted from my Droid in the john.
Side note 2: Other than to Mr Michael Smith, I have never purposely shared the site with folks here… mainly bc they are NOT gamers. Mr Smith has though.
Side note 2.5: that last post sounded like I was accusing Mr Smith of doing it. LOL. Just meant she has shared the site with other folks… I have not.
It’s all good. No issues.
The first market surveys on the iPad are commencing to be released. Apparently it has a 91% satisfaction rate. That is a lot higher than I expected although the sampling group seems too small to be completely reliable.
