Best Buy is making a push into the multibillion-dollar market for used video games. The Richfield-based consumer electronics retailer this week began testing used game kiosks at several of its stores in Dallas and Austin, Texas. Customers can insert their used games into the kiosks, which will scan it for functionality, then immediately issue a voucher redeemable for a Best Buy gift card.
Best Buy will also test the sale of used games at the stores testing the kiosks, and some of the kiosks will rent both games and movies. Other retailers are also testing out used-game options, including Wal-Mart and online retailer Amazon.com.
Game publishers have mixed feelings about used-game sales, as they aren’t guaranteed a cut of the sale the way they would be with a new game. To combat this, some developers have started adding new content that only works if the user has the original game.
