Wing Commander fans can rise from their knees; their prayers have finally been answered. Chris Roberts, creator of the legendary space combat games, has announced his return to the gaming industry after a successful career as a Hollywood producer. Roberts is poised to unveil his new project on Oct. 10 as part of GDC Online. According to his teaser site, Roberts left the games industry in 2002 because of a dissatisfaction with the technology available to him at the time. Now that the gap between his dream project and the tools available to realize it has narrowed, Roberts is poised to make a hopefully triumphant return.

The only “triumphant return” in the space combat sim arena would be Freespace 3. Bring it.
A new installment (or re-imagining) of Wing Commander would hardly be anything to scoff at. Sure, Freespace was the undisputed king in most people’s estimation, but WC and X-Wing/Tie Fighter were really the “holy trinity” of the genre. Bringing any of these storied franchises back to life is worth pursuing, esp. if the devs put fans first. Ideally that would mean support for LAN play and modding, but at the very least means sparing us any always-connected BS. I doubt I’m alone in saying that any single player game that requires me to be online for more than the initial registration will never be a purchase.
I was was informed of Chris Roberts new project some time ago.
I would have been incredibly happy about it were it not that I also was informed it would be an MMO.
And I detest MMO gaming.
I have played all wingcommander and privateer games. I would love a new modernized Privateer-like space sim with space combat and trading and upgrading my ships, weapons, devices etc., but if it really turns out to be an MMO I will be very disappointed. I have yet to see an MMO that is able to seduce me into enduring the immersion destroying grief of massively online multiplay.
Lucas Arts never made a space trading sim. My dearest wish would be to live my digital existence in the Star Wars universe as a trader/bountyhunter/smuggler.
Imagine the thrill of playing a smuggler, being hailed by an imperial customs ship and getting boarded for inspection. Imagine how current technology could render a Star destroyer in beautiful detail and how cool it would be to be pulled in to the ship dock in the underbelly of an ISD by a tractor beam.
Lucas really missed a beat by never creating a space trading game like that. There is no IP in existence I know off that would be so suited for a game like that.

There is discussion on the forum about single player vs MP and another about the prosepects of an MMO. I am in the boat of being a SP only and have voiced my opinion. I understand that Chris does read the forum and I hope that if the original intention is an MMO styled game, I hope that there has been enough opposition to it that he reconsiders it.
Argos, you said it, pal. Try and guess who I’d want to be.
decent cut scene video… good to know.
Seems pretty much tied to be an mmo, not sure if this has a monthly charge? any one know.
My fear that this might be pure MMO has somewhat lessened. The game is supposed to be playable off line too.
I sure hope so, because Chris Roberts is now bringing elements to the space sim genre I have always wished for. The most important of which is the fact that the player does no longer equal the ship. As a player character you are now separate from the ships you fly in. This makes for a whole new level of realism.
