According to an “Entertainment Trends in America” tracking study conducted by NPD On Wednesday, a significant majority of Americans plan to hold steady or increase spending on entertainment, such as music downloads or video games. The only declines were in printed goods, such as newspapers or magazines.
Americans budget $150 per month in entertainment expenses, and according to the report, 75 percent of consumers surveyed said they will spend the same amount or more on digital music downloads as they did in 2008. Sixty-five percent will spend the same or more on video games, and sixty percent will spend the same or more on CDs. About 73 percent of consumers say they’ll spend the same or more on movies, an increase of 7 percent from last year.
Just over half, or 51 percent of American consumers purchased a DVD or Blu-ray disc over the past three months, and 36 percent purchased a video game. Less than a third, or 31 percent, purchased a CD. Much of the average American’s entertainment budget goes to subscription-based services, many of them online.
