PC gamers, you may want to sit down before you read the next sentence. Diablo III will require an Internet connection at all times. This, according to Executive VP of Game Design Rob Pardo, is because of the new improvements and features that Battle.net will have in conjunction with Diablo III.
What are these fancy new improvements and features, you ask? Cross-game chat is one, allowing all Battle.net users to converse using the RealID system. Diablo III’s in-game auction house and item storage are other improvements that require a constant Internet connection. Achievements and stat-tracking also apparently cannot be done while the player is offline.
While this won’t affect most Diablo III players, it will certainly be a thorn in the side of single-player gamers who don’t always have an Internet connection. This will also affect gamers who will no longer be able to play at their in-law’s house over long weekends on a farm in the middle of nowhere where the Internet doesn’t exist.

Ythe moralea, we know. I think I speak for many a PC gamer when I say that Blizzard can go fornicate with itself. Same goes for other publishers who do this, namely Ubisoft. I gave this a lot of thought and decided that I no longer have the moral right to condemn people who pirate these games. Myself I’d much rather just not buy and not play, but if anyone feels like stealing from a robber is a right thing to do… I can’t say that i disagree as strongly as before.
I am currently one of those ones in the middle of nowhere using Satellite as my sole means of internet connection. You combine the inconsistent connection due to weather and the fact that you can only use so much bandwidth a month then this game went from a want to not wanting even if my internet does improve.
yea, I best this gets cracked before they release the game…
Neat. With more and more ISPs jumping on the bandwidth-capping bandwagon (including my own U-Verse), we’re going to need more details regarding how much data is being sent back-and-forth with this always-on connection.
Well it looks like Diablo III is not going to be my cup of tea. I will sit on the sidelines for about three months, after the first patch, and other things. And see how long it takes them to remove that function. When they say something like it will not work with out a internet connection (all the time) then that would be false. Blizzard, is talented gamming company, it looks as if they have taken a seat to somebody against piracy. That is just like purchasing a new automobile, and then having the dealership tell you that you can only drive the car, when the dealership is open. So after 6:00pm in the day, the car will shut down, but all functions will return when the dealership is opened the next day at 7:30am.
Steam will allow me to play off-line version of Half Life II Episode 2, when there is no connection. So what is the skinny, is it to say that Valve’s Steam department better at making games than Blizzard.
I think not, it will rest with the sales, if sales are down then they might relent. If not then I do not need to purchase this games. Since I do not play Diablo in Mulitplayer. I play single player when playing Diablo, I have played this since the first version, and I am not changing now.
It should be like this, if they offer you the single-playing element of the game, then the game should allow you to play it when you want, internet connection or not. If there is a multiplayer and you want to play then internet connection required.
-Well this is my take on the subject.
Not interested yet!
I bought Splinter Cell:Conviction when it was $6.49 at gamersgate, knowing full well about the internet connectivity requirement. I paid about the same for HAWX 2. I’ll pick up Diablo III when the price is around that same range. If it has xbox 360 controller support =D.
Starcraft 2 was hacked and playable offline within 2 weeks of release.. Diablo3 will be no different. What i dont understand is why Blizzard would alienate the casual single player crowd , wich makes up a rather large portion of thier market share.
Its about greed, far as i can tell .
Pass.
I don’t care about Blizzard anymore..
I never even beat Diablo 2 so this will be an easy pass for me. I will be fine waiting. Just bought Fallout 3 today! I no longer have the time to worry about getting games as they come out.
I guess I’ll pass o n D3, Torchlight 2 is coming soon!!!
Personally, I don’t care whether a game requires internet connectivity. Lots of games these days require that you’re logged on somewhere, just look at Microsoft games. If you’re not logged on, you can’t save.
Most black hats, myself included, really don’t care. Most developers, myself included, really don’t care. There’s really no moral issue here and it is understandable. Better that they just do this than something more nefarious.
On a side note though, I probably won’t be playing this.
I pass, and I’ve talked to 9 other gamers who say the same thing. When I buy a game, I consider it to be mine, with no strings attached. Steam’s temporary offline mode is as far as I’m willing to go in DRM. There are too many good games now that don’t require such draconian extremes for me to bother with this one.
I will proably buy this because Ive been waiting years for it to come out. I just hope its set up like Stream and you can buy levels and stuff as they come out. This Auction house dosnt cost real money I hope. And I hope it dosnt require a montly fee or ill pass.
Call of Duty Black Ops is an amazing game it has both single and mutliplayer it comes out with new levels every few months and I buy them. But if it had a monthly fee or ingame buying options like better guns for 5 bucks real money I wound not bother with the game.Thank god its not like that. Long live Call of Duty.
From one thief to another ( Blizzard ) – I will download your D3 from a illegal source.
How do u plan to stop me now ?
Ur company started off on the right track years ago – now – Burn in Hell.
What is everybody so down about, so much fuzz over a game? World of Tanks, and very soon to be followed with World of Planes and Battleship, are much more exciting-better-cooler-hip + FREE, FREE, FREE, FREE, FREE. For the idiots out there that do not understand the word FREE, look it up in an dictionary. I rest my case.
Yes, like most other commentators, Go @#$% yourself Blizzard. Or maybe they should change the companyname into @$^*storm. If my internet is down, than in the time between it’s up I like to play games. Sorry, I’ll steal it if possible, or maybe I can’t even be bothered. There are tons of good games out. Maybe I’ll re-install some Neverwinter nights? Now thats a nice game! Or diablo 2
Sinterklaas – hit the nail on the HEAD – that’s where i am right now and that’s where it’s at – World of Tanks.
Badass Game – check it out.
One big bomb of course!
On who? PC Game Pirates.
Every game should implement such system, everyone who likes the game and is willing to pay for it won’t care.you don’t like it? now that means most probably you are a pirate.
Don’t be posting “Oh… No.. I pay for every game I play … I don’t want to be connected to internet while playing…” you know and I know that these are bs.You are already connected to internet 24/7.
Stupid posts are stupid.
Every game should implement such system, everyone who likes the game and is willing to pay for it won’t care.you don’t like it? now that means most probably you are a pirate.
Right, because that always-connected thing really stopped Starcraft II from being pirated to hell and back. Let’s hear it for daniel, another genius showing us how much paint he ate as a child.
I didn’t say it will prevent the game from being cracked! It delays the pirating depending on how effectively the system is implemented , every single day the pirating is delayed = Money.
There are also some benefits to the legitimate users, like achievements, auction house, chat,….
More and more publishers are investing in anti pirating systems and punishing their legitimate customers with limitations, do you think they are not making more money out of it? Oh…I forgot your little secret:D
psycros my friend, I speak 3 languages , have a masters degree and my IQ is 146. So the paint eating thing is not correct
I lost a lot of money to pirates last year and I am so implementing “Connected while playing” scheme in my current title, you don’t like it? click away and don’t buy:)
And so the inevitable phalometric contest begins…
^ My circulatory system in my nether regions is above average. I think it’s because I’m connected to the internet 24/7, until my crap-hole Time Warner provided cable internet is down for maintenance or some “system outage”.
I’m not a pirate…I greatly enjoy the creativity of Blizzard’s titles…and I have waited for D3 for a long time. But I strongly disagree with their discision to force on-line connectivity, and will therefore most likely pass on this game. As a long-time PURCHASER of my software, I don’t feel its necessary for a company as talented as Blizzard to do this. There are other ways to prevent piracy and still remain consistant with the spirit of the series – which has a huge fan base. The success or failure of a title will not only rest on how creative the programmers are…or how innovative the marketing dept can be: But whether the FANS accept the product. What was shaping up to be “THE” title of the year will, in my humble opinion, be a disappointment because of this one ill-thought out idea. TO BLIZZARD: Please rethink this strategy!! Many long-time Diablo players care less about the multi-player aspects and more about being able to play the game anytime-anywhere. Check with your beta-testers…put out a survey. You’ll see that most will reject this decision, and therefore vote with their wallets in this lean economy. There are LOTS of other dynamic and exciting titles out there…
I buy games at the store rather than download them via Steam or another such source because I don’t have an Internet connection at home.
I think I’ll be pirating this, thanks. Cracked and playable offline. All I need is a flash drive and a few hours at the library.
Sorry, Blizzard, but that’s the only way I could play. I’d pay you $60 and THEN crack it if I felt like supporting something that completely screws me over. I like your games. Not your DRM.
