Picture from EA shooting loaded DICE?

It seems EA has managed to lob a hornets’ nest into the Battlefield: Heroes gaming community. EA and DICE have received a hasty and vocal backlash to their announced pricing restructure of the free-to-play, combat shooter. Formerly the game held two different kinds of currency; Valor Points (VP) which players earn by simply playing the game (they operate as a form of loyalty currency) and Battlefunds (BF) which are purchased with real dosh. After EA’s changes to the game, the bottom has fallen out of the market value of Valor Points effectively forcing players to pay for Battlefunds in order to stay and play with the big boys.

Many players have complained about the new pricing structure on the game’s official message boards declaring that they don’t want to be forced to grind through the game in order to continue to play for free. Many have raised the valid point that the free play element was one of the original selling points of the title.

So how do companies get the balance right between offering a good product that people can afford and making money?

I don’t understand why people are complaining. It’s not like they bought something and then it was taken away from them. The game was FREE, and still is FREE. The only difference is that people who pay get an advantage now. Just like in real life. So, what’s the problem?

Michele White that quote was worthless. I agree whole heartily on the article. I have played since the beta… the structure should be pay for permanent upgrades in my opinion.

Not completely worthless – I’ve gotten at least two points for each time I had to use it to answer a question on a Management exam. ;)

I guess its a business afterall – maybe it was amarketing ploy all along – play for free get addicted and then have to pay up to feed the addiction….the problemn with that model is that something has to be generally very appealing to have addictive qualities…..from my experience the game can be fun but its not a classic ‘I must at all costs’ product…..but there says me whose adicted to Jammy Dodger Biscuits…..!
