When newly released PC title From Dust was still in development, publisher Ubisoft uncharacteristically stated that the game would launch without DRM. This excited many PC gamers, and people began eagerly awaiting the release date.
Fast forward to the release of From Dust. Many PC players were distressed to find out that the game actually did possess a form of DRM. From Dust requires users to have an active internet connection while they are signing into the game. Once the game has started, the internet connection can be severed at no loss of usability to the player. While this is less harsh than Ubisoft’s usual “always online” DRM, it has still angered PC gamers who were promised a clean copy of the game.
While it is our job to remain neutral when delivering news like this, there is nothing keeping you from voicing your true feelings in the comments. How do you feel about Ubisoft’s change of heart?

Aren’t you missing the point here? I got the game, and the DRM is the least of my worries. Yes, it was a sheisty move, but it doesn’t really affect the gameplay for most people.
I also don’t mind not being able to set the graphics (second most heard complaint in the PC version), the immersion is just fine.
What really does irk me is 1) not being able to save in the middle of the level, and 2) small areas to play in.
Restarting the entire level because of one mistake is ridiculous. This is not 1985, it’s 2011. There is no excuse for this. None.
Then again, if you could save, you’d probably pass the game in 3 hours. Levels have the feel of single scenarios in any other game. Challenges are so short they literally take under one minute per challenge.
Ubisoft are totally uncaring of the PC platform. Their DRM is unfair and it doesn’t take into consideration all of the variables that make up a PC. One small issue with the internet connection and that’s it, you cannot play a game you have FULLY PAID FOR…
Where is the logic in that?
Ubi just caved!!! They are making a patch which will remove the DRM altogether.
You guys still have it relatively good when it comes to DRM, I live in South Africa and want to cry whenever I just hear the word online based DRM. Unlike the US & Europe we DON’T have cheap/affordable, uncapped, always on Internet.
I have a 5GB/month capped connection at home as anything else is completely out of my (and most people’s) price range. With Windows updates, huge emails from people who still think 50MB videos of kitties in diapers are cute and keeping all my other software up to date I end up burning through that in half a month easily.
This means that halfway through the month I can’t play Mass Effect 2 anymore (I made the mistake of installing the DLC I got free with my edition, which means the game refuses to load any of my saves if i’m offline. They don’t tell you this before you install the DLC). It would be the same with any Ubisoft game I figure.
When Halflife 2 came out I still only had a dialup internet connection (common in SA at the time). The box stated you have to be online to install, no problem I figured. They didn’t say that it would take GIGABYTES of “decrypting” before you can play…. I had to wait 3 months and run a phonebill that could bankrupt a small sovereign nation before I could play the game (we have a Telecoms monopoly in SA, phonecalls are NOT cheap). I HATED Valve and Steam for YEARS.
Add to that the fact that we only have 2 (1 until 2 months ago) undersea cable to Europe & the US and that most connections are still 512kbps here and you have a mess.
I want to cry whenever I even THINK about online DRM….
