The PC version of newly released Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes with a voucher for a free download of the game for OnLive users. This promotion is meant to get new players to try OnLive’s services and saves PC gamers from having to pay for the game twice. It was reported earlier today that GameStop wasn’t a big fan of this promotion, and decided to do something about it.
In a memo to staff, a GameStop manager told employees to open up all PC copies of Deus Ex and remove the free voucher. This hurts their customers twofold: Gamers are paying full price for opened goods, and they are no longer getting access to the free download. The memo in question is shown in the image accompanying this story. Click the image to read the complete message.
I’ll admit, when I first saw that memo, I thought it was fake. A lot of gamers dislike GameStop, and the memo itself is nothing special and could easily be forged. Proving me wrong is GameStop’s own FaceBook page, which features the following message:
Regarding the Deus Ex OnLive Codes: GameStop’s policy is that we do not promote competitive services without a formal partnership.
Square Enix packed a competitor’s coupon within the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution without our prior knowledge and we did pull these coupons.
While the new products may be opened, we fully guarantee the condition of the discs to be new. If you find this to not be the case, please contact the store where the game was purchased and they will further assist.
And there you have it. GameStop didn’t want to give any promotion to a competitor, and felt it was justified in opening every PC copy of Deus Ex they sold as new to their customers. Did you get your copy there? How do you feel about this news?

:O
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, but…
:O
I don’t really care, since I haven’t given GameStop my business for years now. Too busy getting better deals on Amazon, GoHastings, Steam and GamersGate.
One thing is certain – brick and mortar stores that sell digital goods will become obsolete. GameStop is just like Blockbuster. The one in Valley Fair Mall in San Jose, CA just closed down. No surprise. Digital distribution is the future whether you like it or not. I’m sure when the next-gen consoles come out, I’ll be very surprised if the vendor doesn’t offer digital distribution for every game available.
Ummm i Really hope this vendor has been understood.. Hey customers.. they just said FU .. Lol
Question, if the GameStop Manager read the back of the game’s box, I am sure that there was a EULA from the company that created the Deus Ex : HR. Now the question is, that if they cracked open the box to remove the item from inside the box, and tear it up or destroy the free codes well we have a problem with that. First and foremost that is Stealing, simply put! Secondly, the user is paying for the codes, that piece of paper is bound to the Box / EULA, because they shrink wrap, and or seal the contents of the box. That would be like GAMESTOP Manager having a Memo sent to most stores, and instructing their sales people to open the NEW StarCraft II: Wins of Liberty Edition Box, with all those googies inside, and take and destroy the 2GB USB enclosed with preloaded Starcraft and Broodwar. Reason, because this would kill the Sales of old versions of games in the bargin bin. You know, lots of people like to go to the bargin bin at Gamestop and get a good deal on a couple of games that has not been bought in about 5 years. So if Blizzard is going to put a good full copy of StarCraft and the game ad-on Broodwar, then We as Gamestop Manager’s need to take that out and destroy it, and reseal up the box and sell it for full price, and also do not forget to black out with a sharpie the mentioning of the USB key on the side of the Box Set.
I dont see the reason behind the removing of the codes. Also back to the EULA, is it not the practice that most game makers, and software manufactures such as Adobe, MicroSoft and others to name a few tell you if you read the EULA that if you break the seal, you are agreeing to the EULA set forth. So your bound to it. And if the said GameStop Manager has his sales people to break the seal, then they are bound too it. Sounds too me, that they are opeing a hugh can of worms, esp in the legal dept.
Sorry to RANT, but this is very low, and I would love for somebody to sue the paints of GameStop for that simple reason. Very low in my book, and just makes me not want to stop a that Gamestop place…
