Picture from Kinect 2 add on to have lip reading on next gen Xbox

Talk of Microsoft’s next console won’t go away. While we continue to hear rumors of its release, nothing concrete has been given. Fueling the rumor-mill is a report about how the Kinect 2 will be able to read lips and sense your mood. The device will allegedly know whether you are happy, like when you are playing Skyrim, or angry, like when you are playing Dark Souls. Some could say it looks like gaming may be headed to a time where the controller will not be needed. Question is, will gamers happily do away with their much loved handheld companion?

“Will gamers be happy to do away with their much loved handheld companion?”

All jokes aside…no. The PC market will always want the control offered by a tactile interface and console gamers will always want some form of controller.

I can see some games applying the same business model as has been confirmed for the movie industry with 3D technology. Wherein they sacrifice quality and story telling for gimmicky technology. Hands free (ie Kinect) has its place but it shouldn’t be the end goal. Not in the near future anyway.

Rant over.
