Picture from Modern Warfare 2 sales hit $1 billion

Activision Blizzard announced today that sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have reached the $1 billion mark.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and video game records,” said Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game.”

Guitar Hero III and Call of Duty 4 were the only other two that I could find, but there are most likely more out there.

I’d imagine World of Warcraft made more money than that. Or maybe I’m wrong.

I am sure the Madden Series has topped 1 billion in sells but i doubt if any one Madden did. I think FIFA 10 was the fastest selling game at the time of its release so I imagine that game is doing well.

I don’t think that they figure in the revenue for WoW the same way as they do for other games, but if someone has actual game sales (without monthly subscriptions added in) figures please post them. As for the Madden series, you are correct, 2007 alone was over $200 million.

impressive. this will probably be just enough revenue to offset the losses they made with the overrated “vacuum hero” (motto: they suck.) franchises, i.e. guitar hero, band hero, dj hero, etc.

I would have expected that after all the bad stories, sales would go bad. Guess not. I for one regret buying this for 50 :D It’s not a bad game at all, but FPS problems in single player and latency and server problems in multi player just make it overal less enjoyable than MW1.

Better game tho. :O
