Movie executives are allegedly complaining that games are stealing their thunder. Halo 3, released Sept. 25, grossed a massive 170 million USD during its first day on stores shelves. That number now exceeds 300 million USD. In comparison, movie box office numbers have been falling. According to Next Generation, total film ticket sales were a mere 80 million USD for the Oct. 5 weekend, down a whopping 27 percent over last year. Research firm Media by Numbers says that’s the industry’s worst performance for an October weekend since 1999. So are games responsible for the worst October weekend for the movie industry in years? Of course not; crappy mainstream movies are. The Heartbreak Kid, anyone? Good Luck Chuck? Hollywood needs to turn its finger away from the game industry and toward itself.
