Picture from MS offering 360 replacements

According to Joystiq, Microsoft has confirmed that some Xbox 360 consoles aren’t compatible with the upcoming, mandatory firmware update. The console manufacturer will replace consoles that become unable to read retail game discs with a new Xbox 360 Slim that sports a 250 GB hard drive.

Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs,” the Microsoft statement reads. “This issue manifests itself a as a unique ‘disc unreadable’ or ‘disc unsupported’ error on the screen. We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox Live and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console.”

I haven’t played mine in years. I gues now is a good time to hook it up, upgrade firmware and see what happens.

You know, I actually hope mine turns out to be one. I wouldn’t mind the upgrade.

I have a 360 Slim and the Halo Reach beta disc played fine in it. The only real issue I had, and its a big one, was the initial install of the beta firmware from the DVD. It didnt seem to install correctly during the first two attempts and I was afraid I bricked my system. The third attempt got the job done and the console runs fine. Of course, the procedure to install the release firmware will be a breeze… but hey, now I have two copies of Halo Reach – NAH NAH!

BTW:

When Microsoft’s firmware screws up a 360, they ship you a new console!

When $ony’s firmware ruins a console (firmware 3.61) by causing the console to overheat when playing LA NOIRE, $ony denys it.

YAY!

Rockstar posted on their website (then immediately took down) that older 60/80GB PS3s were overheating/locking up when LA NOIRE is played on them if those consoles were upgrades to the newest firmware, 3.61. $ony is denying this, instead blaming the game itself for the overheating.

Considering all the trouble that $ony caused this past month +, I tend not to believe anything they say anymore (much more so than I’ve not believed them in the past)

Considering that $ony is throwing Rockstar under the bus, if I were RS, I’d just not release anymore games on the PS3 and all future $ony platforms until $ony apologies to me (RS). Teach them a lesson IMO… but thats just me :)

Typo: “if those consoles were upgraded to…”

I dont understand why The mod market to make these things more efficient to dissapate heat hasnt grown more. The failure rate due to heat created by newer games is not exclusive to the console market anyways. Im sure if i didnt use riva tuner with my Aging GTX 280, it would have melted down over a year ago.

Anyone else see that Vid where “the russian” blows up the remains of his 360 . the only thing left he found was the heatsink. and man was it small ..

I cannot answer for the PS3 but I heard a lil tale about why the original Xbox 360 had such a bad failure rate (I posted this before but cant find or remember where):

Apparently the damn hippies in Europe rallied for lead free solder to use used in electronics and it was made law in 2006-ish. Sadly, Microsoft had already finalized the design of the Xbox 360 and as such had to go with it as well as use the lead-free solder in the console. The lead-free stuff breaks down more easily when heated & cooled repeatedly… hence the red rings/defective 360s

Oh, I just read a report about the LA NOIRE lockups happening on Xbox 360s now. If prove to be correct, maybe it wasn’t the PS3′s 3.61 firmware that caused it. We’ll have to wait for yet more info to be released (hopefully soon as my copy is due any day now)
