Picture from One in ten video gaming youths could be addicted

A new research article out today in the journal Psychological Science suggests that nearly one in 10 children who play video games showed signs of what could be considered an addiction to games.

A poll of 1,178 U.S. kids, aged 8 to 18, found that 8.5% of those who played video games exhibited at least six of the 11 addiction symptoms such as skipping household chores or homework to play games, poor performance on tests or homework because of playing, and playing games to escape problems. Exhibiting six of 11 such symptoms can lead to being diagnosed with an addiction. The Iowa State University researchers adopted the gambling addiction criteria for its self-administered questionnaire because there is no current medical diagnosis of video game addiction.

Two years ago, the American Medical Association debated the issue of video game addiction and forwarded a report to the American Psychiatric Association asking it to determine whether it should be included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Maybe they should say 1 in 10 parents fail to control their kids!

well…at least it is a minority! and it’s safe to say that everybody is addicted to something and while kids are addicted to games they probably aren’t outside doing drugs, getting drunk or whatever, so they shouldn’t be that worried.

I couldn’t agree more Zaug – there’s this neat little word in the English language that can usually handle most kids (I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt with the 17 and 18 yos) – and it’s NO!

“No, you have to finish your homework and chores”

or “No, your hour (or two) is up.”

I have four boys and they each get one hour a day. We even count the time that they watch each other. We found that they would spend four hours near the computer. One playing and three watching. After we stopped that they started to find other things like toys, bikes, and OUTSIDE!

Our rule is similar – one hour during the week, two on a week-end or vacation, but we don’t count watching as they spend quite a bit of time “observing” Dad on his days off. ;)

I think I still need some parenting…..I play for hours sometime. Well, when I get the chance.

I need some control. I’m addicted to gaming. Not as much as I was. I’m not rebellious or anything, so it’s not that extreme.
