Having recently cut 4% of its staff, Sony has announced that it will offer a free version of their popular MMO Everquest II, titled EverQuest II: Extended. The game will operate parallel to the paid version, and will be effectively a separate game. Unlike other free-to-play models like Dungeons & Dragons Online and LOTR: Online, SOE is splitting the game, and will release two distinct entities, where players will have the option of either taking part in the subscription-based game or the completely free game. Extended will also give players access to all the paid game’s zones, including those added with the game’s Shadow Odyssey expansion.
Extended will adopt a micro-transaction business model, whereby players can purchase power-up potions, armor, classes, weapons, and mounts and through the marketplace. Additionally, it will use a smaller web-based application download model allowing would-be players faster access to the game. The title is rumored to see a release on or around August 17, so there’s still plenty of time to pack your mule and polish up your dungeoneering boots!

Vice-President of Studios, Gavin Cheshire has confirmed that Codemasters Southam-based studio is currently hard at work on sequels to 2008′s Race Driver: Grid, DiRT and last year’s Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. “In Southam it’s full steam ahead with the next iteration in our Flashpoint series, as well as the next Dirt and Grid. It’ll be interesting to see how it all pans out.”
He also insisted that UK-based Codemasters would not be shifting resources to India in an attempt to reduce development costs. “This is absolutely not the case,” he said with regard to the 50 percent stake acquisition completed earlier in 2010 by India-based Reliance Big Entertainment. “It’s very much about Reliance investing in our skills and abilities over here in the UK.”
Codemasters has also promised that its upcoming EGO 2.0 physics engine will offer “cutting-edge” capabilities when it arrives via an as-yet unnamed title. Codemasters currently has F1 2010 pinned down for release later this year, while Bodycount is due to land early in 2011.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Two Worlds II from our friends over at SouthPeak, but today they bring us a new look at the world of Antaloor from the eyes of a tragically misunderstood antagonist, Sordahon. Sordahon is the right-hand man of Antaloor’s chief baddie, Gandohar, and it’s really not easy being him. The video is the first in a series that chronicle his life’s trials and tribulations, while taking a not so serious look at what we can expect when the game arrives.

Snake Galaxy HD coming to iPad |

 |
Bulkypix has announced that following the successful launch of Snake Galaxy on the iPhone, the game has been ported to iPad and will soon be available on the App Store.
Snake Galaxy is a three dimensional version of the classic Snake game, that has players slithering around 3D planets. Your goal is to consume as many jewels as possible before you crash and burn. You direct the snake with your finger, guiding it toward the goodies while avoiding obstacles like giant letters on the newspaper planet. With each jewel you consume, your snake grows a little longer, making it harder for you to avoid obstacles-and your tail.
There are also point thresholds you must reach to unlock the next planet. In order to reach those point thresholds, you must eat the goodies in your path as fast as you can. There is a multiplier bar at the bottom of the screen that refills every time you feed your snake. But you must be careful not to let the bar zero out. If it does, you will have to start the multiplier chain all over from scratch. There are large diamonds that appear from time to time that are worth big points. Grabbing these before they vanish is critical for making it to the next stage.

Full Sail University’s Girls n’ Gaming summer camp runs August 2 – 6 this year, and is a place where participants learn from industry professionals, and explore the process of game development from concept to completion as it would occur in the real world.
The five-day camp offers a compressed production cycle based on the same model used in the game development industry. Participants work in teams to conceptualize, structure, and build their game utilizing the same tools and software that are used by professionals. Campers will be able to test, revise, and ultimately be able to complete their game, presenting it in an open forum at the conclusion of the session. All participants will come away from this experience with an understanding of the game development process, and their very own playable game.

The mouse and keyboard have always been far superior to gamepads in action gaming, which is one of the reasons why cross-platform play hasn’t caught on with developers and publishers. Now, GoGamer reports that Swiss hardware maker Splitfish Gameware is trying to level the playing field with their FragFX line of combination mouse/gamepad units for the Playstation 3. The company is expanding their collection with the Piranha, Barracuda and Shark models, being introduced at this year’s Gamescom convention in Cologne, Germany.
Jason Johnson, Splitfish’s head of Creative Development, has high praise for the new additions. “The controllers have some surprisingly excellent capabilities, such as dual platform compliance, full PC support and extremely low power consumption. We are excited to be showing these for the first time at Gamescom 2010.” The show opens on August 18.

Other Ocean lays out their final argument for puffin power with Puffins Let’s Race. Cute and cuddly as penguins may be, Other Ocean’s Puffins series culminates with downloadable proof that puffins are far better than penguins by showing the puffin’s greatest advantage: flight.
In April, Other Ocean showed how Puffins are better egg handlers in Puffins Let’s Roll. Last month, the developer proved how puffins are way better at fishing in Puffins Let’s Fish. This week brings us Puffins Let’s Race, the third DSiWare game taken from the Nintendo DS game, Puffins Island Adventure. Puffins are way faster than penguins…in the air!
Puffins Let’s Race is now available as DSiWare for 500 Nintendo points.
