Keith Burgun, the lead designer of Dinofarm Games, drops in for a visit this week on episode #94 of the Avault Podcast. Keith came on to discuss his latest Big Game, 100 Rogues. Unlike most games these days, you sit, you play, you die and collect your score. No saves – no do overs!
Additionally, this week’s conversation includes Spanish teachers that moonlight as clowns, recycled coffee, LEGO Harry Potter, MLB 2K11 on OnLive, Madden NFL 11 (old school Madden returns?), Tiger Woods on the iPhone (no, not the Bonetown version), sports games in general, and StarCraft II (should you play it with a controller?). There’s also a Big Surprise on deck, so make sure to listen to the entire episode or you’ll miss out!

Here is my idea for a sports game:
Take the guns and power-ups from Robot Wars from the NES,
Add that with the tackles, passing mechanics and hits of NFL Blitz,
Sprinkle in bits of Mortal Kombat fatalities,
Mix those up with the “what the crap is going on” chaos of Rugby,
Then combine all three of those into a decreased gravity environment similar to outer space that requires a bio-suit with propulsion jets to propel you in every direction on the X-Y-Z axes.
You could have some sort of HUD that would display where the ball was in play on this giant 3-D cube playing field. Make this a 20-32 player multiplayer match, and what you have is 20-32 players floating through 360 degrees of playing field freedom, blasting each other with weapons while dodging 300 lbs. defensive linemen who could shoulder check them into a completely different trajectory, winding them up on the other end of the field.
In the event two players collide at just the right momentum and angles, you would bring up a button combination that would allow you to hack off limbs or even a head. The injured opponent would still be able to move/shoot/tackle depending on the damage, until they bled to death. But a decapitation would obviously be instant death.
Oh, and the bodies would remain on the field to float around as obstacles.
Of course you’d have a scoring system, like getting the game ‘orb’ through a hole or something. The strategy would be to score the most, while incapacitating the most players.
But I’d play it for hours just to go completely insane without any restrictions.
Obviously my coffee was more than just warm creamer.
I wanna play that game!!!
Heck yes you do! Want to team up and find some developers? Maybe we could win the $250k prize from Activision for their indie developer contest.
