It was bound to happen. It’s been about a month now, and the PSN is still down, so according to Edge Online, some gamers are joining the other side in order to play online. UK retailers have said that since the second week of downtime, there has been a 200% increase in folks trading in their PS3 consoles for either cash or a 360. When you think of how ridiculously popular Modern Warfare 2 is, the frustration is understandable. I gladly welcome them into the 360 camp with open arms.

“how ridiculously popular Modern Warfare 2 is”…..
I don’t know anyone that plays MW2 still. That game blows. And no one is even going to buy MW3 because they will all have BF3.
I wonder if Sony can pull the “We are too big to fail” stunt, and get some of that bailout money that’s going around.
Ha. NOBODY is too big to fail. They know they are in some serious stuff right about now.
I’m totally with you Benjy, but it seems that both the US and the EU governments are regularly fooled when certain corporations and countries tell everyone how they must be bailed out or the world will end. Who knows, maybe with some careful lobbying and campaigning Sony can manage to illegitimately get their hands in our pockets too. =)
Speaking of hands in pockets. Did any PSN or Plus subscribers get billed this month?
Not a subscriber…only subscribe to good old XBOX Live for the time being…
Sony is not “too big to fail.” There isn’t enough widely spread capital involved. Sony won’t “fail” either, per se. They’ll take a major hit, though, and deservedly so. But they won’t go belly-up the way Lehman Bros. did.
As for gamers trading in their consoles, I think that’s a testament to three things:
1.) People are PISSED at Sony. Again, rightly so. You fail to deliver service long enough, you’re bound to piss people off.
2.) This highlights some of the popularity of consoles as media centers for things like Netflix streaming. I mean, think about it — someone is willing to trade in their PS3, even though it can still play offline games, DVDs, and Blu-rays, why? Because they can’t get Netflix streaming to work as easily? That’s pretty remarkable.
3.) Multiplayer gaming is HUGE. Huge enough that people will dump a console JUST to get their multiplayer fix. (Because, yes, you apparently CAN get Netflix streaming to work on PS3, it just takes some doing.) So, if folks aren’t ditching it for Netflix, what’s that leave? Pretty much multiplayer gaming and the other online capabilities.
To me, that says a lot about the future of console gaming. We’ve come a long way from Atari 2600 and NES.
