Picture from Sid Meiers Pirates to make port in October

On October 5, cast ye gaze upon the horizon, pray to Poseidon for fair seas and set sail with Sid Meier’s Pirates. The classic swashbuckling game has been adapted for the Wii, and allows aspiring buccaneers to earn their sea legs serving as captain of one of 27 customizable man-of-war ships while they explore the Caribbean islands of the 17th century.

Descend upon unsuspecting seaside colonies armed with a motley crew of loyal seafaring scoundrels. Embark on missions to locate secret maps and discover treasure chests bursting with gold and jewels. Use these newly acquired riches to barter for supplies and build ships with stronger firepower and bigger sails for faster speed and better navigation. The title also includes two Wii-exclusive mini-games: Bombardment and Lock Picking.

I LOVED Pirates! Gold on the Sega. I wonder if it’s awkward on the WII.

I have had Pirate’s on just about every system it was released for but the Amiga version is still my favorite.

I was feeling pretty l33t having played it on the Gensis, but you just had to one up me haha.

I do remember shopping at a swap meet in San Diego, and someone had a PC version, boxed, on floppy discs. I think I bought it for like $5 or something.

The ship battles remind me of Rampart on the NES.

Do you know of anything comparable to those games for current generation PC’s?

I used to play this flash game a lot at my old job, if I remember correctly it’s somewhat similar to the ship battles in Pirates!

The Gensis version was a good version but was only an Amiga CD32 port. Atari released Pirate’s for the PC a couple of years back. I still have mine somewhere packed away.

I actually owned , for a short time, the arcade version of Rampart. So much easier with a trackball.

The only game that comes to mind is an old psygnosis game for the Playstation. I forget the name but I can’t think of anything currant for the PC or consoles.

Does something called Broadsides ring any bells? For some reason the very first time I played Pirates that’s what I was thinking of, but it was so long ago I don’t really remember much.

I played the last PC version (which this is based off of) for two weeks straight when it was released! Its an amazing game and still available @ Best Buy & Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/3920/) for like $10.

I guess the Wii version will be exactly like the XBOX 1 version, cept with motion controls (which may or may not be a good thing – sword fighting might be cool, maybe). If you have a semi-modern PC, there is no reason to get the Wii version, just get it for the PC for less $.

Also, it was fairly simple to mod the PC version: tweaks to difficulty and flag mods being the main attractions:

I made my own flag once – pretty cool!

That does look fun enough to drop $10 on.
