This is always a hard decision in my books – there were so many fun and great games released this year. I’ve decided to cheat a little. Being the iPad reviewer, I thought I could get away with telling you what my favourite two iPad games of 2011 were. iPad games are smaller than regular games, so I’m picking two. Ladies and gentlemen, cue the tiny iPad drum roll. In no immediate order, these are the games that keep me amused on my travels and between sessions in Skyrim:
Cosmonauts
This is a crazy space combat game that plays like a cross between Worms and Angry Birds. Careful, though, as it is quite addictive. I love fun games like this. Its a game that you can play for five minutes or an hour, with each combat experience sufficiently different from the last. The characters and ships you play with have a great cartoony feel to them. I like the fact that while it doesn’t take itself seriously, the games can be quite challenging. There is enough depth here to keep you happy for quite a while (I’m still playing after 4 months of having it).
Tiny Token Empires
This is a great mini-strategy game. I love history and particularly military history. I also like games such as Tetris and Bejewelled. So this game, which combines map conquest in the ancient world with puzzle based combat, pushes all my buttons. Again, I love the cartoony feel to this game – it has some great artwork. The game has humour and also pays homage to ancient myths – with creatures as mummies, Hercules and Medusa up for a fight. You can select from five different ancient civilisations to play with and there are a whole variety of goals to keep you amused other than just map conquest. I would seriously recommend this to you if you haven’t already discovered this game.
