Joystiq reports that Perfect World Entertainment plans to turn Star Trek Online free-to-play by the end of this year.
“And also Star Trek Online, after the acquisition, in fact Cryptic is working on the free-to-play model for Star Trek Online,” Perfect World Entertainment’s CEO, Kelvin Lau, said in a recent earnings call for Q2 2011. “This is going to be launched by the end of this year as well. So I think free-to-play model we have a bigger potential in US market and also in China market.”

Great, I loved the space battle portions during the Beta. The landing parties on the other hand was not so great to the point of being lack luster. I hope it has gotten better. If not at least Starship battles were fun.
The point that sucks though is that now they do this only after I move out into the boonies and have limited internet.
I was also in the beta long enough to create a character and progress to the first away mission, and you’re right — the planetside part of the game was less than inspiring. But now that it’s going FTP, I might jump back in and try going a little deeper.
