Picture from Torchlight – Diablo’s double?

That’s the question in relation to Runic’s new inexpensive hack-and-slash PC RPG Torchlight. From what I have seen, the game offers a visual treat with stylish, cartoony graphics depicting rich and colorful expansive dungeons. Two of the key features that might set it apart from other games of the genre are its $20 price tag and its tool modifier. The latter allows you to design fiendish new dungeons, create characters, calibrate the rate at which you earn experience, create new classes and weapons, and create your own skills and spells. Another feature that is personally nice for me – is the game’s lack of unskippable scripted sequences and cut scenes. Some games drive you mad with cut scenes (Borderlands anyone?) – so it is refreshing to come across a game that just lets you get into the action. It’s single player only – so there is nobody to push you through the next scary door you encounter.

I’ve logged 12 hours of gameplay thus far, and cannot believe this game is only $20. Our readers should know that Torchlight is really at par with any Triple A title of this genre. Great graphics, progressive action, no major glitches and as compelling as the original Diablo. I highly recommend it.

The demo was fun, but I found a bug there. Hopefully it’s not in the full version.

Thanks guys useful additions – fro what I know the game seems pretty reliable and pretty much bug free.

The ending is weird. You kill the final boss (Ordrak) but still get infinite quests in town. Sure you get better items and the battles are much harder, but it all seems kind of pointless. I still enjoyed it, but not too much after the final boss.

Angel, didn’t Diablo go in loops as well? Or is this something else you are talking about?

This game is incredible. I wasn’t expecting much but immediately after starting my warrior character I was hooked. It is like a HIGHLY polished Diablo II minus the multiplayer. Trust me, the game is great even without it! It’s pure digital crack to me and I just can’t seem to put it down and that’s saying a lot considering I’ve been bored with all video games lately even great titles like Modern Warfare 2 and LFD 2 I play for short bursts but I can get lost for hours in this game. $20!! Pick it up you won’t regret it!!!!!!!

Alaric: Yes it did, but with no multiplayer in Torchlight it seems kind of pointless.

Great community for modding and is far more challenging than diablo which is way too easy. Infinite dungeon after you beat the story to see how deep you can go.

Great recommendation Simon – its gem finds like these that keep me to this site. I love the fact that after you complete the story you can keep dungeneering on and on….

Be sure to tune in to Friday’s podcast because Max Schaefer, CEO of Runic games will be on the show. We just recorded it last night and he talked a lot about Torchlight and why certain decisions were made in its creation.
