Picture from No trailer for Star Command...yet

This little gem is coming for the iPhone and Android sometime in 2012. You design and control a spaceship and explore the galaxy, meeting and blowing new species to bits. You also hire and manage your crew. Generally, you attempt to take over the universe, with a view style and gameplay very reminiscent of X-COM (aka UFO: Enemy Unknown) and a graphic style similar to Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters.

Developer War Balloon Games has announced that they don’t have a game trailer yet, so to whet our appetites they have released a taste of things to come with two animations. Both show the quality of work they are bringing to the game. There are some nice touches, such as the salute at the end of the sequence of hiring a new crew member. This is one game I know I will be getting on Day 1. 2012 just might go down as the year of the X-COM.

This could easily be done on Live, PSN and PC – possibly even in a browser. Games like this built the PC gaming industry and could take mobile games to the next level. Sadly, there’s no guarantee we’ll see titles like this that take full advantage of home consoles and computers again (and if we do they’ll probably be half-finished messes like Civ 5..which is why I’m not esp. hyped about the new X-COM).
