Picture from Trials HD wins Xbox Live Arcade awards

The Xbox Live community has voted RedLynx and Microsoft’s physics-based stunt biking game Trials HD as Best Overall Arcade Game of 2009. The game beat out such popular titles as Battlefield 1943 and Shadow Complex. The title also won the XBLA innovation award.

Microsoft said that players cast over 1 million votes to help determine XBLA’s best games in the third annual Xbox Live Arcade Awards, which extend beyond the overall “best game,” as voted by the XBL audience, and include:

  • Best Overall Arcade Game: Trials HD
  • Best Original Game: Splosion Man
  • Best Family Game: Hasbro Family Game Night
  • Best Co-Operative Multiplayer: Battlefield 1943
  • Best Competitive Multiplayer: Battlefield 1943
  • Best Solo Game: Shadow Complex
  • Best Innovation: Trials HD
  • Best Graphics: Shadow Complex
  • Best Classic/Remake: Banjo-Tooie

I like Trials HD, but I don’t get why it is so popular. It’s a good game, but it isn’t that good.

It’s easy to see why Trails got the nod. Of the games listed, it features the most fervent fan base who on the PC side of the equation have supported the thing with amazing mod support. This is the equivalent of stuffing the ballots. : )

For my money – Shadow Complex was the best entertainment on XBLA last year. Fantastic game that paid homage to its primary influence, Super Metroid, while carving its own path and showing just how in-depth an XBLA game should be.
