Universal Pictures’ hopes of becoming a major video game publisher have been put on hold in the face of a bad economy and a major flop. The studio is no longer actively financing production of movie based games after poor sales of their March release, Wanted: Weapons of Fate. Wanted sold only 100,000 units in the U.S. in its first month, generating under $6 million in retail revenue (considerably less than the average costs of $20 million for games of this type). While Universal hasn’t given up on the idea of investing in video games, their current plans involve a more conservative approach as to which titles will be developed.
