Picture from Voltron to appear at Comic Con

Back in February, THQ announced they would create games based on the 80s cartoon Voltron: Defender of the Universe. Now they’ve revealed that folks will finally get a look at it this year during Comic-Con. The title will be part of a Voltron panel that will include toys, comic books, and other collectibles. In addition to the upcoming series of games, there’s a new cartoon and a feature film in development.

I never saw Voltron back in the day. Or maybe that’s the thing on ABC I vaguely remember being on Sat. mornings where several robots combined into a big one (although I woulda sworn they were humanoid rather than cat-bots). Didn’t get to see that network very often, the local ABC affiliate didn’t come in well on our antenna. In any case, this seems like about the lamest 80′s property you could try to revamp. Why not a live-action Robotech series or movie trilogy?? If done right it would be a pop culture phenomenon all over again. Transformers proves giant robots will sell even if the story is garbage and nothing is adequately explained.

robotech for the PS2 rocks!

I think you may be thinking of the original Power Rangers. Voltron had lion shaped vehicles that when combined made a giant robot.

I watched cartoons all through the 80′s and I can tell you there are 100′s that would not make a good game… Or a mediocre PDgame for that matter.

Trust me, you didn’t miss much with Voltron. The basic episode structure went like this:

Big bad monster gets sent from evil plant to good planet, and wreaks havoc.

Voltron force goes out to fight it, and attacks it with individual cat-bots. Individual cat-bot attack fails miserably.

“Form Voltron!” Run the same bot-combining footage from episode 1 (saves money on animation).

Fully formed Voltron tries to be the evil monster by punching the snot out of it. Snot-punching effort fails miserably.

“Form blazing sword!” Voltron slices big bad monster in half, and it explodes. Roll credits.

“Next time on Voltron, more of the same!”

If you watch the original Japanese Go-Lion cartoon on which it’s based, the background stuff ASIDE from the actual big monster fights is where the interesting stuff happens. Most of that was cut down or edited for U.S. audiences, or I just don’t remember it because I wasn’t paying attention to it, and even at 5 years old, I still found the bot fights boring.

Robotech was infinitely cooler as an adaptation. And Roy Fokker is still a badass.

Hmm…if they did a Robotech movie, I wonder who they’d cast as Roy. He’s clean-shaven so that rules out Chuck Norris.
