Picture from Warner says music games must pay more

Warner Music Group, the world’s third-largest music company, said on Thursday that video game makers will need to pay more to license songs for music-based video games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Warner Music chief executive Edgar Bronfman drew comparisons between MTV’s launch 25 years ago, Apple’s iPod launch five years ago and today’s video game companies like Activision, Blizzard and Harmonix. “The amount being paid to the music industry, even though their games are entirely dependent on the content we own and control, is far too small.”

…that just means no one will license Warner Music Group music. Be greedy, play marbles by yourself…

Warner Music Group is entitles to demand any amount it desires.
However, it’s up to game makers to decide whether they wish to pay more money or not. In this day an age, there are more appealing alternatives to major record companies, when it come to music licensing.
http://www.youlicense.com, the open online music licensing marketplace, lets indie artists interact with video game makers and allows them to quickly and inexpensively license their music.

I see RIAA isn’t paying the music companies enough these days. I guess they ran out of 12 years olds and poor single parent families to sue. Take your greed to the next level to finish yourselves off. The independent music model is almost complete. I HAVE YOU NOW!

In other words, even if gaming publishers gave ALL of their profits, their children and a few of their organs to organizations like Warner, Warner would turn around and say something like, “The amount being paid to the music industry, even though their games are entirely dependent on the content we own and control, is far too small.”

I would suggest that for those games that aren’t dependent on music the way that niche games like Guitar Hero is, simply add an Ogg/ Vorbis plug in and allow players to stream whatever music they have. That way the “own and control” is shifted back on the user and not companies like Warner.
