The Inquirer reports that the Wii has overtaken the Xbox 360 and is world’s numero uno console. In the past week, the Wii rose to 10.57 million consoles sold worldwide, while the Xbox 360 also passed 10.5 mark, with 10.51 million consoles sold.
This was mostly due to the release of Madden 08, where the Xbox 360 version is outselling the PS2 version for the first time. This also marks the turnover point between old-generation and current-generation consoles; you can expect PS2 sales to start to decline as the owners switch to the Xbox 360, Wii and PS3.
When it comes to Sony’s share of the market, The Inquirer says the company is in a dire need for Gran Turismo 5, which they say looks “absolutely brilliant” and will lead to the sale of an additional 2-3 million consoles. But for now, the PS3 can only hold the candle for the Wii and Xbox 360. In the handheld area, DS is nearing the magical number of 50 million (current take is 48.83 million), while PSP should pass the 23 million number in next 14 days.
