The San Jose Mercury News says Nintendo’s Wii took the top honors in August for U.S. console sales. The Wii sold 404,000 units, while the Xbox 360 sold 277,000 units and the PlayStation 3 sold 131,000 units, according to the NPD Group. Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo, told Mercury News this week that the Wii continues to sell out, with inventories lasting just about a day before they’re shipped out to stores. At the stores, they’re being continously supplied but sell out within hours. Fils-Aime said Wii sales have now topped 4 million in the U.S. in the past 10 months. The numbers for Microsoft were up from 170,000 the month before, thanks to the 50 dollar price cut in mid-August. Sony’s figures were down from 159,000, though, despite its own price drop on the 60 GB PS3.
