2K Games has announced that XCOM is currently in development at 2K Marin for the Xbox 360 and PC. The title is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity’s struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By utilizing the first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes from combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

HECK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!
Most of you are probably too young to remember XCOM much less the failed shooter of the genre XCOM: Enforcer and why it failed… It deviated too much from what made XCOM successful and instead turned it into a uninspired first person shooter similar to postal. While I’m excited to see that 2k is breathing life into a old favorite of mine, I am also hesitant since this formula has been tried in the past and resulting in a absolutely horrible game. Will it succeed? Personally I hope so because I would love to see the XCOM series rebooted and I’ll be keeping tabs on this game in the coming months.
In addition to my previous comment:
Why again does the “story” for this shooter say we are a FBI agent? XCOM may have not had a story but it was quite clear that XCOM was its own multinational agency not some branch of the FBI. If 2k studios can’t even get that right my hope for this game is little to none… Last time I read the title it wasn’t “X-Files game announced”.
Complete and utter travesty. Don’t hang the name of a legendary classic game on your pos fps. If you can’t remake the game the way it should be, don’t sully the name.
To be honest the only game that I would consider a spiritual sequel to X-Com would be Silent Storm. even though it was a WWII based game with a Scifi twist it is a great game.
“True to the roots of the franchise” Well that cant be right if its a first person perspective.. The original and brilliant game was turn based strategy with TONS of micro management , which is what gave the game its epic feel and flavor. Every attempt to recreate this in a different genre has failed miserably.
The fact its in the hands of 2K Marin is cold comfort for fans of the original to be sure. I wonder if anyone on the dev team has actually played, and beaten XCOM enemy unknown. Somehow I Doubt it..
I just have to comment again , Lol firstly i agree chip, Silent storm was absolutely inspired by the design principles of XCOM. Secondly … I honestly believe if they simply re released the original game verbatim . but with a newer rendering engine that it would see better commercial success than This project .
Thats of course a very uninformed statement seeing as im not in the dev team loop. However ive played all the original games Many times and have yet to see anyone get even remotely close to the absolutey addictive game design that was XCOM
I still think this is true due to the fact of WHY the original was so good.. The Design was absolutely brilliant. And it came on 4 floppy disks.. LOL
The sequels, Terror from the deep and Apocolypse Both kept the design pure to the original with the latter allowing for Realtime play if one preferred. I , and everyone i know who played them Had the same opinion. Truly original, simple to learn and absolutely massive in scope once you started to get a few missions under your belt.
Sigh, SSI I miss you !!!!
We just booked our meeting with 2K at E3 for this game. Stay tuned next month for more details.
I currently own all the X-Com games on the PC and double dipped for the Steam versions (I never did own them for the Amiga/CD32). I first played Xcom on the Playstation 1 – this version, of course, was the best version ever of the first game. I ended up never finising any of the games (PS1 or PC) – mainly bc I liked starting over & over again. Never could get into Interceptor – my rig at the time couldnt play it ;-p. I still play the first one from time to time (via Steam) and own a free clone and those other UFO game clones.
That said, I AM looking forward this game. Why? Why not? Just like all the cry baby fanbois QQ’d over Fallout 3, then were proven wrong, maybe this new XCom game will be freaking amazing & genre breaking! Then again, it might not be… maybe it’ll suck so badly that it’ll make the worst video game of all time, Half-Life 1, actually look like a good game.
That said, until it’s released, there is no reason to QQ & complain. You can play the originals (like I do), the various free clones, the various retail clones over and over again to your hearts content. At least give the developers a chance – maybe it’ll be golden. And, if it ends up being a dud, then I’ll be right there with the QQers!
Omegabob… Frankly I can already surmise your age as being born most likely in the 90′s due to the statements you have already made such as playing X-COM for the first time on PS1. In addition to that you have already called your judgment into question by stating that Half-Life 1 was the worst video game in history which can only mean you have a very limited library of games you have actually played up to this point. If you are attempting to judge a game that was released in 1998 (which I would guess you were most likely 8-9 years old at this point) by today’s graphics then you have already missed the point of Half-Life 1 and the tremendously large effect it had on gaming at the time. I am hoping that you are also aware that the very studio that supports steam became famous for the game you are quoted as referring to as “the worst video game of all time”. If you want the worst game in the X-COM series then perhaps you should do a google search of X-COM enforcer and in case you are too lazy I’ll include what PC Gamer had to say about it in 2001 “If you can turn off your brain, Enforcer can be fun for 20-minute sessions.”
In the future I would refrain from the following:
1.) Attempting to review games you clearly did not play when they came out and attempting to do revisionist history/reviewing on graphics based on today’s standards.
2.) Contradicting yourself in your own argument or as some would call “flip-flopping” to hedge bets… Pick an opinion and stick with it.
3.) Making broad overarching generalized statements when referring to a diverse base of people such as your fanboi comment. This may come as a shock to you but sadly you do not possess all of our thoughts on the matter and as such have no way of knowing why we do or do not feel the studio is capable of developing a game properly.
To put it bluntly I don’t agree with your attempts to say we are all fanbois afraid of anything different in the genre because frankly it’s not true. While I cannot speak for any other games I am not afraid of changes to a license but what I am afraid of is a studio that cannot properly do their research into a I.P. to even get basic facts correct. Case in point with this game is making the player a “FBI” agent instead of a member of a multinational organization known as X-COM which the original game clearly covered. This is not an X-Files game and yet it seems as if the studio is attempting to grab potential interested from both the X-Files crowd and gamers who have played X-COM which will only doom the game to fail.
Titan7000:
Mental masterbation or pompous snob much? You are beginning to sound like an Apple lover… Just sayin’ (and teasing so lighten up there!)
As for when I was born… lets see… I saw Star Wars Return of the Jedi in the theater on opening x3 (I sat in the theater for over 8 hours that day… back when they didnt check ticket stubs). My first console was an Atari 2600. My first PC was a C64 and we used those crappy Tandy TRS-80s in school. Any questions, punk?
Half Life 1: IMO is worst game ever made. BTW, I finished it x2…. tried for a 3rd time with the newer Source engine release; however, it was just too painful to continue on. If you were a reg member of these forums for the past 6 or 7 years (I actually ferget when I joined up plus we had a few crashes), you would know all my reasons as to why it sucked. That said, here’s a brief summary:
1 – Its a 3D Super Mario platformer.
2 – There is no storyline what-so-ever.
3 – The worst sin of any game of this type: there was NO ENDING!?!
I never said HL1 was not innovative nor do I dismiss its place in history and other games it inpsired. However, Hilter inspired much of the major countries of the world to eventually work as one, man up and defeat him. Does that make him wonderful?
Note: I never did complete HL2 – last thing I did was run around on the rooftops of the city in the beginning, then I think I found some sort of time machine. I currently have no opinion of this so-called sequel, except for my confusion over my character being the same character from the first game… considering he died at the end. Meh.
I understand your opinion about this new Xcom game. If you dont like it, then why waste the effort to complain about it? You sound like the fanbois that came around here when Derek Smart posted about the possibility of pursuing the Freespace license. All those QQers… all those posts… wow. In the end, he abandoned the idea and those fanbois never got ANY sequel. (note: not saying the game would have been a good game, however, no one ever gpot a chance to find out). Also… Fallout 3…? Turned out to be a GREAT game, no?
Oh… the Playstation 1 version WAS the best version of Xcom. It featured the best graphics (higher res & you could play it on a 40 inch TV), best sound and redbook audio for some of the soundtrack. If anything, I am sad I sold that sucker back to EB Games… it now can be found for $70-100 on eBay…. damn it I want that version so I can play it on my PS3…
Anyways, would I like to see another turn-based version? HECK YEAH! Will I? I dunno. I dont know anything about this game… maybe there is a turn-based element to it… however, until we get more details… why QQ? Maybe there will be a hidden mini game??? Again, who knows… all speculation until more info is released.
Finally, OMG! Speaking of the C64… Ultima 4… sucked. Seriously, I played that game for over a year… one late night in college, I stayed up all night on what I thought was the last dungeon. I couldnt save it bc there were no save games in dungeons (lovely). At the end, I recall I was supposed to type in a word that I’ve been collecting letters for… and when I did… apparently it was either the wrong word or there was a typo!?!?!? The game kicked me out of the dungeon and I was back on the surface!?!?!? So… Ultima 4 – another terrible game… although I still own the cloth map and ankh -they’re cool!
(note: I did not spell/grammer check it bc I knew it would piss you off!! tee hee!- notepad FTW!)
Oh side note: forgot to mention that although I have had my dreasm already made into reality with the release of Pirates! a few years ago (love that I can play it anywhere with the PSP version that I had to hunt down – ugh), rather than Xcom, if I had my choice, I’d rather have someone make a sequel to Wasteland instead!
Why wont someone make a sequel???? WHY WHY WHY?????
