Picture from X COM: Enemy Unknown announced

Did I not just say 2012 will be known as the year of the X-COM? Well, here it is! A real X-COM game that’s not an FPS is on the way from developer Firaxis. Not only did we get the great news of the game, but a whole series of pictures to peruse. X-COM was one of the first games that I purchased for my Amiga and PC. While the sequels failed to live up to the original, I have high hopes for this one.

I never played X-COM back in the day but nearly all my friends did, and its the stuff of legend with them. I love good turn-based games, though: the old Microprose classics, Fallout, Might and Magic, etc.

Oh, and anything that requires logging into Facebook = automatic fail.

This looks like the X-Com project we’ve all wanted. Firaxis is a Dev I trust to do turn-based strategy well. I hope the PC interface isn’t compromised too much for controller functionality!

Actually I thought that the Silent Storm engine would have made an awesome engine for an X-com game.

Silent storm !! loved that game, Very much Xcom ala ww2 universe. {anb really difficult}
I think there is the potential for a great game here, however Im sure consolitus will dumb it down way beyond the depth of game I remember with the original, Terror from the Deep and Apocolypse .

That is a bummer, as it was very much the heart of those games.. The details.

Hmm. I dunno. Firaxis’ recent track record is not, from my view, all that terrific. I thought Civ V was pretty poorly designed and executed, although I haven’t played since around the first patch. I suppose it could’ve gotten better, but it still struck me as just a poorly made game. This leaves me cold for an X-com game.

Well, it HAS to be closer to the X-Com series than the new X-Com game from 2K Marin, which is a first-person shooter instead of turn-based strategy. Forget being part of a multinational special forces group, you’re just an FBI agent. Frankly, it may be a good game on its own merit, but they should not have slapped the X-Com label onto it.

Closer does not mean better, though. That’s kind of my point. I couldn’t care less what the brand name is that’s on the box. It’ll draw my eye initially, but then I’ll judge the game on its merits.

Civ V I bought on the strength of the brand name, and it was pretty weak. Never again.

Fair enough, especially considering that none of the original staff that created X-Com are involved with the Firaxis product. Then again, none of them are involved with 2K Marin’s game, either.
