Picture from Dreamcast: Whats the big deal?

I’ve been a gamer for as long as I can remember. I’ve rescued princesses, slayed dragons, captured ghosts and saved worlds. I started my gaming life with a Sega Master System, and I’ve played almost every single console that’s come out since. The only one I missed was the Dreamcast.

Now I know what you’re thinking: “How can you judge a console you never even tried?” I’m not here to judge, my friends, I’m here to learn.

Dreamcast fans will fight tooth and nail to defend their console’s honor. They are the most loyal of fans. I admire that dedication, and I would like to find out from whence it comes.

To experience the phenomenon that is the Sega Dreamcast, I have decided to buy one and try it out. It should arrive at my door later today. I picked up a $2 copy of Hydro Thunder at a pawn shop, and I have Power Stone 2 on its way later this week. Now I need you readers to tell me what else I’m supposed to be playing. I want the “full Dreamcast experience.”

I’ve seen people defend the Dreamcast by saying, “If you weren’t there when it first happened, you probably won’t get it.” I’d like to believe that isn’t true. To me, if a console stops being fun after a few years, then it’s not the greatest console ever created. I can go back to my TurboGrafx 16 and play Keith Courage in Alpha Worlds right now and have a blast. I could call my best friend over and blow through Contra tonight, like we did every single day after school when we were kids, and it’d still be awesome. Time might hurt how a game looks, but fun never changes.

So, Avault readers, what are your thoughts on the subject? Is the Dreamcast still the top dog, or has it been put to sleep? Feel free to list any DC games you feel I should be playing as well. I’ll be back in a few weeks with my thoughts.

Games to avoid, Shenmue, unless you like driving a forklift and feeding stray cats.

Shenmue was very good, try it out and I’m suew you will like it. Also, Phantasy Star was great.

I’m not sure that magic can be recaptured. It had one of the best launch titles in console history – Soul Calibur.

Then it had some classics in Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, Space Channel 5, Phantasy Star Online, Seaman, and Skies of Arcadia.

But coming to it fresh, outside its historical context… I don’t think it’s likely to make an impact.

Definitely Skies of Arcadia, Virtua Tennis, Jet Grind Radio, and for the hell of it check out NFL 2K1. I’ve always loved PSO however you’ll no longer be able to play online and the offline is weak.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I’ve heard both extremes about Shenmue from friends of mine. It is definitely on my list.

I don’t think the fact that I wasn’t around for the launch will hurt me. I literally have no Dreamcast experience, so this is like a launch for me. I don’t need to experience the hype, I just need some fun games.

Shenmue is like Heavy Rain. It’s a game you need to experience just so you know what everyones talking about. Both games have those who love them and those who hate them. Both took risks and it’s up to you to see if they are something you enjoy.

I still have my dreamcast. I think I just played Tony Hawk 2 on it though. Can’t remember any standout titles, other than how much I despised Shenmue.
