Get out some tech-device wipes and clean off that finger grease, because I’ve got some good games for you to play this week. Per usual, I’ve mixed up the offerings to cover a wide range of genres. I’ve been talking a lot about Zen Wars of late, and I’m happy to announce that it has finally been released! It’s one of my favorite games for the iPhone, and I’ve had the privilege of playing it with both the developer and publisher. Both are extremely deserving of support, but don’t forget to save a couple dollars for the following titles. Each one provides a unique and worthwhile gaming experience.

Save Yammi

Picture from Thursday App Attack for 8/11There are several companies in iOS game development that I’ve come to expect great apps from. Bulkypix is one of those companies. Their latest title, Save Yammi, is a cute puzzler that utilizes some of the most popular mechanics in iOS games. The app is unique in that it asks you to draw multiple lengths of rope to intercept a falling cookie, causing it to fall into the mouth of Yammi. To up the ante, there are stars that you can collect for bonus points. With over 100 levels it offers a lot of time-killing potential.

My first impression of Yammi was neither negative nor positive, but as I played through levels and began to understand the game’s physics and tactics, I liked the it more and more. Guiding the cookie to each star and finally into the mouth of Yammi isn’t incredibly difficult in the opening levels, but using less rope and collecting all of the stars, while keeping the final time low, presents the opportunity to replay levels multiple times to beat your previous high-score. Save Yammi is a good puzzler to pick up if you’ve grown bored with your current collection. It’s familiar enough to jump right into, but the novelty of drawing ropes (that will quickly disappear) gives it the edge over the copy-cat titles out there.

Stylish Sprint

Picture from Thursday App Attack for 8/11Stylish Sprint is a cool side-scrolling action/platformer. Controls are minimal, letting you focus on more important things, like collecting coins. Each level presents you with multiple objectives that can be completed over multiple runs. The game is as much about timing as it is managing your action points so you can clear larger gaps to complete the more difficult objectives.

What I like most about this title is that there aren’t many similar ones in the iTunes store. I’ve got a lot of puzzle games, RPGs and classic platformers but I don’t own many that are as simple as Stylish Sprint, while still retaining appeal. I guess this app is almost like a watered down acrobatics game. There are several types of jumps that can drain your stamina and leave you free falling to your doom. Each time I performed a double-jump that resulted in a fluid somersault landing, I couldn’t help but feel a little more ninja.
