The days are getting shorter and some of you may be headed back to school. Fall is right around the corner, but don’t fret, because there are enough iOS games in this week’s App Attack to keep you busy through those boring lectures and premature evenings. A few of this week’s apps are free to try (requiring a purchase for the full version) while a couple of the other apps are from major developers and carry with them a heftier price tag. Each app is worth the asking price, otherwise I wouldn’t waste your time by including them in this round-up. Download or purchase a few of them and watch those Fall hours fly by even faster.
Spider-Man: Total Mayhem
I’m not a huge comic book fan but I’ve always liked the super heroes or villains that have the freedom to fly (or swing) through their environments. Because of this, Spider-Man has always been one of my favorites. Unfortunately, this app isn’t much in the way of a free-roaming sandbox environment, but the combat is pretty awesome. There are some linear web-swinging moments, but this game’s real strength is in its execution of graphics and combat for the iOS platform.
If you’re a fan of The Ultimate Spider-Man and the universe that surrounds this branch of the Spider-Man story, then you’ll thoroughly enjoy this game. It’s got all the villains you love (or hate) with the acrobatic combat that only Spider-Man and his webs can pull off. This game is one of the best fighting games that I’ve played on my iPhone and the graphics fit perfectly with its comic-book roots.
RC Plane 2
When I was a kid, I asked for a remote controlled plane for Christmas. I got the plane, but immediately realized that flying an RC plane wasn’t as fun as piloting the planes in my video games. I think this realization stemmed from a bent propeller shaft that resulted from crashing my plane on its maiden flight. I tried an RC helicopter app a while back and wasn’t too thrilled with the gameplay, so I passed up the RC Plane app for a while. After reading some positive reviews I decided to download.
The best parts of this game are the controls and the visuals. If you like the idea of being able to fly a plane through realistic environments using two thumbsticks, RC Plane 2 does both very well. I was pretty disappointed with the “pay-to-play” scheme that limits the amount of aircraft and environments you can fly in, but it’s hard to complain about most iOS games when the cost of the game and the upgrades are about a buck each.
