Whether you enjoy turn-based RPGs, casual arcade or flight sim games, this week’s App Attack has you covered. A few of these apps have been on my radar for a while (some since E3) while others came as a complete surprise via random PR emails. Per usual, each app is one that I feel is worth the asking price and is sure to keep you entertained during the day’s downtime. If you’re feeling bored with what’s on your iOS device take a look at these apps and pick a few up.
Another World
Another World was originally released 20 years ago and has seen ports to over a dozen systems. In this 20th Anniversary edition of the game, players can experience it for the first time, or enjoy it again on a modern device. The app is as much a movie as it is a game with cinematic quicktime events. For those of you unfamiliar with the story, you play a scientist that is transported into the future by a nuclear experiment gone wrong.
At times the controls and objectives for Another World can be confusing, but part of the game’s fun is the exploration of the environment and experimentation with controls and actions. If you’re looking for the typical platformer, however, this probably won’t do it for you. But as someone who is typically charmed by iOS platformers, I found its focus on storytelling a nice change of pace from the myriad of games that seem to have no point.
Fruity Jelly
I first experienced Fruity Jelly at this year’s E3. The game has a playful theme and a cute protagonist in the form a blue glob of jelly. The key to this its charm is its simplicity. Controlling Jelly is accomplished by tilting your device (or switching settings to virtual buttons), but you can also rotate the level 360 degrees with two buttons.
During the opening cinematic, you discover that Jelly’s village has been wiped out. There’s still time for him to save his friends, but he needs to collect fruit pieces (the primary sustenance of these jelly creatures), in order to do so. is addicting and presents an appropriate level of challenge for quick gaming sessions. For the completionists reading this article, each level has a star you can acquire, but they can be significantly trickier to collect than the standard fruit piece. Overall, this is a charming, high quality app that most iOS gamers will really enjoy.

Tactical warrior sounds good. It will give me something to play while waiting for my tiny tower floor to be built.
If you end up liking it, there’s another app by the same developer in my next App Attack. It’s a tower defense game with some twists. Thanks for reading! =]
Turn-based RPG FTW. Someone should port Wizardry 7 to phones.
Turn-based games seem to work pretty well on iOS devices. My guess is that the smaller screens and touch-based controls make accuracy and reaction times worse. Plus, now that I’ve played some MMO’s and RPG’s I think I understand the advantages of different units (tanks, dps, ranged, etc) to be more successful when playing RPGs.
