Character classes for Targon stem from five base classes which are combined for distinctions like battemage, paladin, scout and more. Each base class has its own skill tree into awarded points are distributed. Pretty standard stuff, yet having two classes rolled into one means that you can heft an axe and carry potent healing and ranged spells. The skill trees contain some fun powers and useful buffs, but due to the fact that this is a mouse driven game, only three actions (one for each button), can be assigned to the mouse at one time. There is a hotbar, but instead of activating said power it only allows you to swap them, which can feel bulky while under attack. I perished often due to slamming a key MMO style and not getting the expected response. Mana and health potions are still used immediately, by hitting space or enter, but combat could have been made more fun with a full scope of readily available powers at the press of a key.
Although I have my gripes, battle is still one of the more attractive properties of Legend, showcasing some great character animation which is complimented by some cool finishing moves and case specific attacks from Targon. If he’s confronted by a foe far larger than him, the attacks change accordingly, aiming for the head instead of staying below the belt. How your character moves isn’t the only prettiness you’ll encounter though, as the landscapes in Legend are gorgeous; brimming with life such as swaying grass and trees, piles of broken equipment, and encampments which house not only the malicious enemies of the land, but also treasure chests brimming with booty.
Let’s be honest. Booty is what it’s all about. Sure, killing hordes of goblins, skeletons and stone trolls is all well and good, but what’s the point if you’re not rewarded? With each bloody demise scads of weapons, armor, gold, jewelry and potions eject from the slain, some of it useful, some worth nothing more than a quick comparison with your current setup and a toss over the shoulder. It’s all randomly generated, so that little shiny spec on the ground may yield a paltry sum of gold…or a wholly unique weapon, specifically made for advanced death dealing. Leave no stone unturned in your travels and you’ll surely end up richer and more powerful on the other side.
So here we are, confronted by yet another action role player with high hopes of being your midnight snack until the big gun arrives and takes over our lives yet again. Continue on, weary traveler, the next level is just around the corner.
