Graphics: As I said above, most of the graphics are Quicktime 2D and 3D. That, along with the FMV are just average. However, the diving scenes are well done and enjoyable and truly give you the feeling of being on a deep-sea dive.
Interface/Gameplay: The interface into the Quicktime 2D and 3D is not very intuitive and the response time is SLOW. I found the gameplay rather boring moving around the ship, diving, collecting information, etc. I really had no motivation to keep playing. I’m not a BIG fan of adventures, so maybe that has something to do with it. (Although I LOVED Maniac Mansion and Full Throttle.)
Sound FX: The sounds are pretty good in some places, and pretty bad in others. For example, when you drink from a water glass in your room, it makes a very good, realistic sound. However, when you eat the pizza in your room, it just clicks – no eating sound. The game is full of things like that. Some good sounds, some bad.
Musical Score:
The music in SMoK is very good, the problem is that the music is not always appropriate for what’s going on. At the beginning, when I was just wandering around the ship, the music playing in the background sounded like I should be winning the race in Chariots of Fire or maybe destroying the Death Star not just wandering around leisurely. The music sounded good, it was just wrong for the moment. I lowered the score for music because of this.
Difficulty:
With the help of EDWARD, the puzzles aren’t too difficult. It’s more difficult to actually get the information than to interpret it.
There are also some Indiana Jones type puzzles on some of the islands that are of average difficulty. You must do things like retrieve a flashlight from where a snake stands guard and recover batteries from a monkey that steals your backpack.
Average adventure stuff.
Overall: Enteractive’s Sacred Mirror
of Kofun would have been an average FMV-filled adventure game without the bugs – but with the bugs, it’s even less.
The beautiful diving graphics and abundant oceanographic information don’t make up for the lack of gameplay and
poor interface.
